The Promised Neverland
This will contain spoilers for season one
The Promised Neverland is an amazing horror anime/manga written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu. The story is about a bunch of kids raised in Grace Field orphanage where they live happily with their ‘Mother’ (Isabella) until they're adopted. But two of the kids, Norman and Emma find out that the happy place they call home is hiding a dark secret, which quickly becomes a life-or-death situation.
By the end of the first episode, you are pretty much hooked. Emma and Norman find out when the children of Grace Field are sent away to a new family, they are actually sent away to be eaten by demons. Since we have basically the plot of the whole season things can get predictable, Emma and Norman tell their other best friend Ray who surprisingly takes it pretty well and the rest is just them figuring out how to escape. Even though what happens next can be predictable it still manages to keep constant suspense with their Mother who shows hints that she knows they found out and will do anything to stop them from doing so.
Along the way, we meet Sister Krone another adult helping to feed the children to demons, who becomes an obstacle, but later joins forces for her own reasons. Emma, Ray, and Norman are deciding whether they should escape with all the children or just some. Emma takes more of an emotional approach and believes they should take everyone, while Ray takes a more logical approach saying they leave the rest because there is a higher chance of survival. A lot of people would say Ray is a pessimist, but he is just being realistic.
A few days before the escape we suddenly find out Norman is going to be ‘adopted’ the next morning. Obviously, this causes a big problem in escaping and it leaves everyone upset. Ray and Emma go into mourning and stop talking to people and hide away from everyone.
A couple of interesting plot twists happen. I am not spoiling this part because it would be a way better experience for you if you did watch it and it is pretty important.
When I first started watching ‘The Promised Neverland’ I hated Isabella because I knew that she was going to lead the kids to their death, and she acts innocent when she has this dark secret and that just makes her scarier in a way. But by the end of season one, she became my favourite character because in the last episode we get flashbacks into her life and we learn she was once a kid trying to escape and she lost a friend to the demons and I realised she was just doing everything to survive.
