What is a Whovian? How does the TARDIS work? Who even is the Doctor?
This article should answer all your questions about why Doctor Who is such a famous and much loved show!
On Saturday 23rd November 1963, Doctor Who was born; coming out on the television in black and white for the first time. The Doctor was played by William Hartnell from the first episode, "An Unearthly Child", until "The Tenth Planet". But that wasn't the end of Doctor Who... Definitely not!
As the Doctor is a Time Lord, it means he/she can regenerate (change into a different person) when in a near death experience. So soon, William Hartnell became Patrick Troughnton, then Jon Pertwee, then Tom Baker. The cycle continued for 7 series and a movie, before the world of Doctor Who closed. Many thought that it was the end of Doctor Who. However, in 2005 Russel T. Davis bought it back to our screens with the 9th Doctor - played by successful actor, Christopher Eccleston.
The 9th Doctor was a huge hit and since then we have had 4 new Doctors in the last decade. This year we have seen the first female Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker) and the first black Doctor (Jo Martin) who is a previous incarnation of the Doctor. Many people think that David Tennant (no. 10) is the best doctor of all time and I agree! Altogether, I would recommend watching Doctor Who (currently on BBC iPlayer and Netflix) - the next episode is the Christmas special staring Jodie Whittaker.
