“Laugh out loud”.
“Joyous from minute to minute”
“Inventive, immaculately crafted and surprising”
These are a glimpse of critic's reviews for the new movie Barbie from director Greta Gerwig. Margot Robbie stars as the eponymous doll and Ryan Gosling plays her masculine, overlooked, but still charming Ken in this crazy, colourful comedy.
The film follows Barbie, one of many picture-perfect dolls living their best life in Barbieland (yes, Barbieland), a society where all important job positions are held by the Barbies, while the Kens spend all day doing recreational activities and lazing around. Gosling’s Ken, as expected, is only ever happy when he is with Robbie’s Barbie, and his efforts to strengthen their relationship are constantly thwarted by Barbie’s desire for independence. At a dance party, Barbie begins to question her own mortality, and quickly her daily routines are thrown off balance due to her worries. She visits Weird Barbie, the town outcast, who tells her that the only way to be cured of her woes is to find the child playing with her. From there, Barbie (with Ken stowing away) travel to the Real World, and embark on a silly, funny adventure.
The film is slated for public release on July 21st and critics have praised the film for its terrifically entertaining performances and writing and rich setting. Some have picked up on moments of weak and disjointed story, but only a handful of reviews say such a thing. The film has an average rating of 8.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes and 81/100 on Metacritic. To those who do watch it, hope the positive reviews reign true and enjoy.
