You have heard of the Rubik's cube, the classic puzzle where one has to get each side a block of colour. Have you solved one? Nope. But do you know who can? Welcome to the world of speedcubing...

The man who started it all

Erno Rubik was born on July the 13 1944, in Budapest, Hungry. Erno is the father of the Rubik's cube. Rubik did not make the cube as a toy at first, but used it as a teaching aid to teach his students. Rubik took over a month to solve the cube, calling it the Magic Cube.

Then in 1980 the cube took off, with a new name The Rubik's Cube. Soon, everybody was solving it.

Speedcubing

Then, in June 1982, the first-ever Rubik's Cube competition was held in Budapest, Hungary, and there are still loads and loads of competitions today! Now, in 2023, Max Park has set a new world record a few weeks ago with a 3-second solve! In the comps, contestants have to solve the cube as fast as possible; these people are called Speedcubers. There are loads of events in these competitions, not just the normal 3x3! There's 2x2, 4x4, 5x5, pyraminx, megaminx, 3x3 one-handed, cube, and loads more! Speedcubers don't just use the hard-to-turn original Rubik's Cube; they use speedcubes. Speedcubes are super easy to turn; they're fast, smooth, and stable!
