1-1. Time is ticking. Second by second, the tie is building the pressure of the two teams, not to mention the anticipation of the ardent fans.
Who. Will. Win?
England on one side, Germany on the other; both have an equal chance.
And then it happens. What the English supporters are praying for happens. The goal. The goal. The goal which makes winning seem one step closer. The goal pumped up the energy back to the fans. The goal which will go down in history. The goal, scored by Chloe Kelly. 2-1. To England. Things are looking good now.
But there’s still time left – it's too early to celebrate. If Germany can manage to score 2 goals before the final whistle blows, they have a chance of winning. 2 more. Hard, but not impossible.
England’s goalkeeper needs to work harder than ever to save all of Germany's shots, because even if England doesn’t score another goal, they will win as long as she saves all of Germany's.
And the goalkeeper does exactly that. 31st July 2022. Wembley Stadium. The England Lionesses hold the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 Final finals trophy high up in the sky, bringing smiles to the faces of all their supporters around the world.
It hasn’t even been a year since Sarina Wiegman started coaching the team in September 2021, but we can already see such incredible success. She has also led other countries' teams to victory before – it seems that she has some of the most effective secret coaching methods which led England to victory too. What they are, we may never know!
Keira Walsh, another English team player, won Player of the Match. Those who decided this said that ‘Walsh balanced the team throughout the game’ and 'she hardly loses the ball and after winning it she finds the space to purposefully set up the possessional play forwards.’ I think, if we observe her, we can all agree!
Leah Williamson, the Lionesses' captain, gave a heart-felt and emotional speech. She said ‘we talk and we talk and we talk and we've finally done it’, adding ‘I was told to make every second count because I'll be living it over and over, and I did that today.’ This shows the months of practice and effort that enabled them to reach this level, which, finally, paid off. But, one line delivered by Williamson has left English fans expectant and excited for what’s to come.
‘This is the start of the journey.’
