Yes you saw right. A recent project run by the large Dutch airline KLM and a Dutch university TU Delft are creating an unusual but environmentally friendly aircraft called the V plane.
The V shape of the aircraft and its light weight means that it uses 20% less fuel that the A350 which is a very popular and high demand aircraft at the moment and is also today's most advanced aircraft.
Another unique feature that the V plane has is to have passengers in the wings of the aircraft. This may seem strange and probably extremely crammed but for this aircraft the wings are the same height as the rest of the aircraft.
The aircraft seats 314 passengers and the engines are on top of the plane at the back. In the summer of 2020, the first test flight took place in a German airbase with a scale remote controlled model of the aeroplane and the flight was successful!
This project started in summer 2019
and lots of progress is being made to get passengers to
their desired destination although nobody has announced a date of this aircraft
to take to the skies but I think that hopefully we will see its launch within the next decade but obviously COVID-19 has slowed things down so they
will probably see where they are when the case rates calm down. Let's hope we
can start making aviation more environmentally friendly as soon as possible!
