Blue whales are fascinating creatures - they live in the sea and they eat a lot, if you want to find out more facts about them, read on…

Blue whales are a blue/grey colour, they are usually about 25 metres long , and their tongues (only their tongues) weigh 4 entire tonnes! They have a hairless body and their tails are made of two flukes that join together at the centre - blue whales use their
tails to communicate with each other.

Like I told you earlier in this article, blue whales eat a lot!. They eat small creatures called krill and they eat 8000 lbs (4 million krill) a day! Even though we are completely different to the whales, there are still some similarities between us and them. Like us, blue whales have families and female whales give birth. Female whales give birth pretty often , every two to three years, and when they are about to give birth they have to reach tropical waters to do so. When the baby blue whale (calf) is born, they are already seven metres long. Calves grow 4cm every day and gain four kilograms every hour for the first six months of their life - woah!

There are only 10,000 – 25,000 blue whales left, that’s not many. If we keep going the way we are, blue whales will become extinct. We need to try and save them!
