Anzac Biscuits

MAKES 16

What are they:

Anzac stands for Australian New Zealand Army Corps, which were a group of soldiers from Australia and New Zealand that went to fight in the Gallipoli Peninsula, in Turkey, in World War 1. They were called Anzac Biscuits because the men’s wives sent Anzac Biscuits to them, as they wouldn’t be stale by the time they were in Turkey.

So on Anzac Day (25th April) Australians eat Anzac Biscuits.

To make Anzac Biscuits you need:

  • 1 cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup of Rolled Oats
  • 1 cup of Flour
  • 1 cup of Desiccated Coconut
  • 4 oz of Butter
  • 1 ½ tbsp Golden Syrup
  • 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 2 tbsp of Boiling Water

What you should do

  1. Preheat the oven at 140 °C.
  2. Mix the Sugar, Oats, Flour, and Coconut in a bowl, then put aside.
  3. Melt the Butter with the Syrup and allow it to cool down.
  4. Mix the Bicarbonate of Soda with the Boiling Water.
  5. Mix all the ingredients with your hands and roll them into balls.
  6. Place the balls on a tray with greaseproof paper, then put them in the oven.
  7. Bake for around 15 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.

Serve up and eat.

Enjoy!
