The lionesses are back, with the women's football world cup! This year's cup is taking place in Australia and New Zealand. The cup begins on the 20th of July, and for the first time, the tournament will have 32 countries competing. These teams will be split into eight groups of four teams. The teams in all the groups will play one another one time, then the best two from each group will go to the next round.

Will England win?

England have never won the women's world cup, but hopefully that will change this year. The last winners were the US, which was not really a surprise, as the US is probably the most successful women's football team. England do have some good players, such as Keira Walsh and Lauren Hemp. England did win the Euros last year, so it is possible.

The History Of The Women's World Cup

Denmark won the first Women's World Cup in 1970. Only seven teams competed, and it was unofficial. Then in 1971, another unofficial cup took place in Mexico, with Denmark victorious again. Lots of little world cups took place during the 1980s. The first official women's world cup was held by FIFA in 1991. The cup was held in China and 12 teams competed, but the US won it. The US still holds the most titles, but British football fans are hoping the win goes to England.
