London to New York in 100 Minutes! Virgin Galactic (a company that sends people to space in jets) and Rolls Royce (a company that makes expensive vehicles, posh cars and aeroplane engines), have teamed up to make a supersonic plane that can fly up to more than three times the speed of sound (around 2300 mph/2000 knots)! Although this speed is usually reserved for military use, it's not the first passenger plane to go supersonic.
However, don't get too excited because the tickets are very expensive as they expect to only have 9 to 19 seats per plane. Even if you do get a ticket they are only halfway through the planning process so it won't even start service until at least 2030. There are other people getting involved in supersonic jet travel as well. These includes Boom, Aerion, and Spike. According to Virgin Galactic, the new jet would take around 5 hours to get to Sydney from London and around 90 minutes to go from London to New York. Cambridge to London would only take around 5 minutes! Experts are also expecting another supersonic race, like the one during Concorde's time when the Americans, the British, the French, and the Russians were competing to have the first supersonic plane. Luckily for us though, this time it'll mostly be between the UK and America.
