Liz truss, PM for a mere 6 weeks, has resigned. It’s only 3 and a half months since her predecessor Boris Johnson announced his resignation.

She said in her statement that she ‘cannot deliver the mandate she was elected on’ which was one of the reasons why she couldn’t continue. Truss said that there will be a leadership election within the next week and her successor will be in post by this time in 7 days.

Truss’s premiership came under renewed pressure after a chaotic vote last night in which it has been said MP’s were ‘manhandled’ into different lobbying rooms to change the numbers that were voting for the sensitive issue of fracking.

It is now going to be a very significant challenge for the Tory party to elect a leader and claw back the trust of the people and many supporters and members of the party.
