The Queen’s husband, Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh,
died on 9 April at the age of 99. Since then, tributes have poured in from all
over the world.
Who was Prince Philip?
Prince Philip was born on 10 June 1921 in Corfu, Greece. He was
a member of both the Danish and Greek royal families. He became a British citizen
in February 1947 and married Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II.
What did he do?
Prince Philip served in the Royal Navy during the Second World
War until Princess Elizabeth became Queen in 1952. He was the longest serving
royal consort in British history. A consort is the husband or wife of a queen
or king. The Queen and Prince Philip had 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In 1956, Prince Philip created the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which is an
international programme to help young people learn important life skills. He
also supported many charities and was known for his environmental work. From
1981 to 1996 he was the president of the conservation charity the World
Wildlife Fund, which he helped set up.
All in all, Prince Phillip had a very extraordinary and exciting
life, and we will remember him as a great man who helped shape the world as it
is today.
