A 7-acre farm has been bought in south-east Atlanta to become the city’s first free food forest and potentially the largest one in the country.
It will be run by volunteers, who will willingly – obviously – tend to over 2,500 edible and medicinal plants.
The plot was once owned by a couple, Willie and Ruby Morgan, and they were often left with surplus food and would give away to their neighbours to save it from wasting. They soon sold it to developers in the mid 2000s but nothing was ever built on the plot. Instead, it was bought by the Conservation Fund in 2016 so they can preserve the greenspace.
It is a great initiative as it can be used to reduce famine in the city, with thousands of different edible plants to be available to all of the public for free. These plants can include fruits, vegetables, nuts, and medicinal herbs.
