1. Where the Wild Things Are
A fantasy film directed by the brilliant Spike Jonze. The story is adapted from Maurice Sendak's 1963 children's classic of the same name. This movie is for anyone who has ever dreamed of running wild in the woods, or had an argument with their mother.
2. Big Hero 6
This animation is as action-packed as it is humorous. Big Hero 6 encompasses themes of robotics, friendship, loneliness, grief, danger and creative problem solving (AKA mystery solving).
3. The Wizard of Oz
This 1939 American musical fantasy film deserves its reputation as one of the greatest films of all time. When a tornado whisks Dorothy and her little dog, Toto, from Kansas to the magical land of Oz, a wonderful tale unfolds, filled with illusions, dreams, enchantment and extraordinary adventures.
4. Wonder
Another film based on a best-selling book. A boy with facial differences becomes an unlikely hero, and reminds us of the importance of compassion and acceptance, and that, if you can't blend in you should be proud to stand out.
5. E.T.
A classic. Spielberg’s ET is a stunning portrait of childhood. It plots beautifully and sensitively, the experience of being lost in your own world, (as well as that of being lost in another world). The film boasts the most lovable alien ever, one of the most famous lines in film, and flying bikes. Say no more. If you haven't seen this movie, watch it, NOW!
6. Spirited Away
Master animation director Hayao Miyazaki delivers a deliciously surreal tale about a lost little girl, who is separated from her family and transported to a supernatural world. This film can be demanding of the viewer, but is well worth the effort, and artfully depicts the importance of words and deeds, as well as the power of love.
7. Up
If you like your adventures to be touching, heroic, funny and visually stunning, this film is right up there. Witness what can happen when you tie thousands of balloons to a house, and take a chance on friendship. Warning: you may cry.
8. The Goonies
An oldie but a goodie. Take your mind off your own problems with a tale filled with perilous adventure, jump scares and 'Evil Land Developers'. A group of misfit kids go in search of buried treasure. Pure '80s magic!
9. Paddington
‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ Who could possibly turn away this lovable creature? Behind the sweet and charming exterior of this film lies an important message about tolerance and acceptance. Charming, and positively delightful, this film will give you pause for thought.
10. My Neighbour Totoro
If you skipped this film when you were younger, go back and make good on your bad decision. Miyazaki creates a universe where childhood rules. The spectre of death hangs over the story, but it is enchanting and honest, and you will want to return to it again and again.
