My name is Maïa. I’m 11 years old and I’m in lockdown in the foothills of the French Pyrenees in a small spa town with my mum, dad, little sister and dog.
The rules for lockdown in France (known here as “confinement”) are different to the UK: if you leave your house you must carry a form with you that says where you are going, why, and what time you left your house. You can exercise outside your house but only once a day, only for one hour, and it must be within a one-kilometre range from your house. It is illegal to cycle!
Me and my mum often check up on our older neighbours and my mum does their shopping. On weekdays I do school work for six hours a day. In the mornings my little sister, my mum and me do Youtube workout videos for half an hour. There's a Spanish couple whose routines we really like called Entrena con Sergio Peinado. I love sport and normally do 3 hours a week of contemporary dance, and we participate in dance competitions, but this year they are cancelled because of Covid-19.
I like lockdown because we have lots of time to call people we don't normally speak to so often. But I can’t wait to be free, to dance with my friends and to see my family in the UK!
I hope that not taking the plane and not using the car so much because of lockdown will make people realise how beautiful the sound of the birds singing is, and how important it is that we pollute less and look after our wonderful planet.
