1966 World Cup winner Jack Charlton has died aged 85. The former Leeds defender has, in the last year, been diagnosed with lymphoma and had dementia. One of England’s most popular players, he was in the team that won the World Cup against West Germany in 1966, alongside his younger brother Bobby.

In his family’s statement, they said he died peacefully on Friday. He was at home, surrounded by family. They also said they were proud of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people.

The England football team tweeted to say they were devastated by the news. Leeds United said they were deeply saddened by the news. This was followed by an outpouring of love for the man from friends, family and fans alike.

He is survived by his wife Pat and his three children John, Deborah and Peter.
