On the ninth of May there have been 215,260 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK. With the Easter holidays coming to an end, many people have had to either cancel or reschedule their trips abroad. Many aircraft have been grounded, including the entire EasyJet fleet. Jet 2 and TUI have cancelled all flights into the UK and Ryanair are only running flights from the UK to Ireland.
British Airways have grounded all aircraft at London Gatwick and London City airports, but they are still flying from London Heathrow to destinations in America and more. Many jobs in aviation are at risk, with Ryanair possibly going to lose 3,000 employees in the near future and British airways are possibly going to lose 12,000 employees due to the virus, and may never continue flying in and out of London Gatwick airport. The low cost airline Flybe has already gone into administration with the pressure of COVID 19 on the company. Many large airlines such as Virgin Atlantic are under pressure - potentially going into administration and having to retire some older aircraft.
Although most commercial flights are cancelled, there are still lots of cargo flights flying around the UK. Companies like DHL and FedEx are responsible for delivering vital PPE to the NHS and with more people having to stay at home there are more parcels being ordered online, so delivery and cargo companies have to work harder than ever to deliver your parcels as quickly as possible.
This is definitely the worst year in aviation by far. With a massive drop in flights around the UK, let's hope this will end soon so everyone can jet off to their dream destination again.
