Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been left to fight for his job after the two most influential people in his Government stepped down. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, and Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, announced their decisions on the evening of 5 July.

Why did they resign?

They resigned after an MP called Chris Pincher was given one of the top jobs in the Conservative Party even though Boris Johnson knew he had behaved inappropriately towards people he worked with. Javid said he was leaving because he could "no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this Government". Sunak said, "The public rightly expects the Government to be conducted properly and seriously."

How did the PM respond?

The Prime Minister acted quickly by appointing Nadhim Zahawi as Chancellor and Steve Barclay as Health Secretary. Zahawi, who was the Education Secretary, has been replaced by Michelle Donelan.

Will Johnson hang on?

Even if lots of people in the Conservative Party want him to go, it's not easy to get rid of the Prime Minister. One way is through a "vote of confidence", but Johnson won one last month and there can't be another for a year under current rules. Conservative MPs are discussing whether to change the rules. However, if more ministers lose their confidence in Johnson, he may have to quit.
