Due to the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other major events happening in the world, lots of basic things are going up in price (this is called inflation) which means that some families may not be able to afford them and struggle to pay their electricity, gas, water or other bills. The UK Government is providing financial support for those families but sometimes it’s not enough.
Heating
Lots of people are being forced to choose whether to eat or put their heating on because of expensive bills. This causes many problems as we are quickly approaching Winter and climate experts say that we are going to have hot, dry Summers and colder Winters.
School Uniforms
Another issue to do with pricing is school uniforms. Most schools ask that you wear branded PE kits, jumpers, cardigans, and/or polo t-shirts.
Lots of families may not be able to afford these as they can be very expensive - especially if they have lots of children. Luckily, schools are now becoming more lenient on this subject and are approving of non-branded uniforms. According to Economy, 95% of parents think that school uniform prices are unreasonable.
Food
Lots of charities such as food banks say that they are getting lots more people coming to them because food is going up in price and basic necessities such as milk, eggs and bread are suddenly becoming more expensive. The Trussell Trust says that in 2019 to 2020, 1,909,156 people came to them. In 2020 to 2021, the years of the height of lockdown, 2,568,597 came to them needing help. Lockdown meant that people couldn’t go into work and many were ‘furloughed’ to help stop the spread of coronavirus. This stopped money from coming in to businesses, hence the money struggles now.
