When it was rumoured that bleach could kill coronavirus on surfaces, Donald trump suggested that we should try injecting bleach into the human body. Of course, this is a ludicrous idea; but I was intrigued to find out about what would actually happen if someone injected bleach into themselves.

Bleach is found in almost all modern bathrooms and kitchens and is used for cleaning certain surfaces and clothes of stains, bacteria, fungi and certain viruses. Bleach’s active ingredient is called sodium hypochlorite and it is a salt-based chemical compound. The only problem is that sodium hypochlorite is corrosive and can destroy human tissue.

Regular household bleach contains only 3-6% sodium hypochlorite. Although this isn’t an incentive to try it, the worst it can give you is an upset stomach if you accidentally swallow it. However, the bleach that is rumoured to kill coronavirus is called Miracle Mineral Solution and it is a type of industrial bleach. Miracle Mineral Solution is 28% sodium hypochlorite and if you were to be injected with this, or even happened to accidentally drink some of it, you are in for a lot of pain. Symptoms include gagging, pain and irritation in the mouth and throat, burns in the oesophagus and stomach and vomiting. If you don’t treat this immediately it can lead to permanent damage to your internal organs. In some extreme cases it can lead to death.

So to conclude, injecting people with bleach in an attempt to stop the coronavirus will just make people even more sick than they already are in this hard time. So let’s stay safe and stay at home, as we wait for scientists to create a vaccine for this virus.
