The oceans hit a world record showing dire implications for our planet’s health.

According to the EU’s climate change service, the global sea surface beat a previous record set in 2016. It reached 20.96 degrees celsius. This is far above average for this time of year. This is because they soak up heat and have been soaking up the heat from climate change.

Oceans are vital to regulate climate as not only do they soak up heat, but they also drive weather patterns and produce 50% of earth’s oxygen. Carbon Dioxide is not easily absorbed by warmer waters meaning there will be even more planet-warming gas in the atmosphere.

Warmer oceans also affect marine life like fish and whales, who search for colder waters, this could upset the food chain and even fishing stocks could be affected. Some predatory animals get aggressive in warmer waters as they feel confused. Additionally, warmer waters will quicken the rate of glaciers melting and this will increase sea levels.

To help, you can:

. Invest in energy efficient appliances.

. Reduce water waste.

. Compost the food you haven’t eaten but try not to waste.

. Drive a fuel-efficient vehicle.

. Reduce reuse and recycle
