Due to the
pandemic this year’s Met Gala was the first since 2019! The Met is held
annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. This year it was
held on Monday the 13th of September. The Met Gala raises money for the Metropolitan
Museum of Art's Costume Institute and in 2019, 15 million dollars were raised.
Here’s what
happened:
In 2021 the Met
Gala celebrated the art of fashion and was presented in two parts: “In America:
A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” Some
celebrities had two outfits, one for the red carpet run way and one for the
dinner party. Some even changed again for the after party. Everyone was
interviewed by Emma Chamberlain and Keke Palmer.
The runway
Starting
with our four chairs:
Timothe
Chamalet, our first
co-chair, kicked off the night with a classic white and black tuxedo on top,
and a pair of white balloon joggers on the bottom. He wore white canvas Convers
on his feet. Sources stated “He kept it youthful but classy”. It was clearly a
mix of two extremes: conventional and unconventional. His look was created by
Haider Ackermann.
Billie
Eilish created a huge
impression on the whole media that night. She wore an Oscar De La Renta
stunning peachy/nude coloured ballgown dress, giving us a beautiful homage to
Marilyn Monroe and old-style Hollywood. This look definitely contrasted to her
usual style. She told her stylists that she wanted the train to be so big that
you couldn’t look away from it and that is exactly what she got. Struggling
with body image comments and hate for a long time I’m sure everyone was moved
by her confidence at the Met Gala 2021. This was my favourite look of the
night.
Naomi
Osaka, the tennis
champion, wore a Louis Vuitton gown that paid tribute to her biracial heritage
(Japanese and Haitian) for her first Met Gala, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière. The
print on her dress was designed by Naomi’s sister Mari, who is also a
professional tennis player. The print was bright turquoise and purple mixed
into a beautiful pattern and black leather satin was layered along her sides
and at the bottom of her dress.
Amanda
Gorman, the poet and activist
wore a navy-blue garment with a long train and short mini skirt front, by Vera
Wang. Amanda said she felt like the Statue of Liberty in a navy sequin “prom
dress”. She also felt extremely grateful to be a co-chair on her very first Met
Gala EVER. She brought a bag in the shape of a book matching the colour of her
glorious dress. Amanda thought it would be appropriate to show off the poet in
her. For those of you who don’t know, Amanda Gorman’s work focuses on issues of
oppression, feminism, racism, and marginalization and she was our last co-chair
of the evening.
There were
more than 500 guests at the Met Gala this year but these are just a few you
might know:
Barbie
Ferreira (you might know her from the show “Euphoria”) showed up in a Jonathan
Simkai shimmering pearl, beaded gown. The detail put into her dress was
impeccable, but my favourite part was the pearls that fell off her shoulders
sitting perfectly on her arms.
Kim Kardashian was put in a head-to-toe black
outfit accentuating her figure. Not even showing one piece of skin. High-heel
black boots went up to her thighs and in my opinion, she will be known for this
iconic look made by Yandy.
Kendall
Jenner wore a dress by Givenchy. Hers was an homage to Audrey Hepburn in her
movie “My Fair Lady”. Her see-through beige mermaid dress was covered in
diamonds and fit her perfectly. The dress was paired with a thick diamond
chocker around her neck and matching heels to complete the look.
The dinner party
Everyone was
served a very extravagant dinner menu presented by 10 chefs. Hand painted
plates and bowls were beautifully laid out and each table had a centre piece
composed by Raúl Àvila. Justin Bieber closed the night with a surprise performance
at the dinner and gave a great show.
I like the Met Gala for many reasons but one being that you get to see a side of some celebrities that you don’t normally see, expressed through their choice of fashion. This helps us know them a little better and I think that's really exciting.
