Carnival is celebrated all over the world. Today I am going to talk how carnival is celebrated in Venice (Italy). According to legend, the Venice carnival (Carnevale di Venezia) started after the military victory of the Venetian Republic over the Patriarch of Aquileia. It was first recorded in the year 1268 and happened every year until the fall of the Venetian Serenissima Republic in 1798. However after two centuries it was brought back in 1979.
The carnival takes place each year in February and ends on Shrove Tuesday( Martedi grasso). To celebrate carnival the people of Venice dress up in elaborate and colourful costumes and masks. Sadly though the masks were the reason why it was banned as it made it a lot easier for criminals to commit a crime and get away with it as nobody saw their face. In addition to dressing up people watch or perform in a parade on boats down the grand canal. This is a spectacular sight with fireworks.
There are many traditions to do when it comes to celebrating carnival, the parade is one of them, but one of my favourites is the "Flight of the Angel," which goes back to the Serenissima period and it involves, an unknown guest of Venice, flying along a rope from San Marco bell tower to the middle of the square, dressed like an angel, and is greeted by the crowd of people in costumes and masks.
A famous food of the Venice carnival is fritole, which are sweet fritters stuffed with cream and covered with powdered sugar. I like the Venice carnival as it is filled with colour, happiness, and celebration, and I would like to see it when I'm older.
